Tax Consultant Services Dubai – 2024 Comprehensive Guide

Tax is an unavoidable part of business. Even in the UAE with its highly attractive regime, there comes a time when you will need to get your accounts in order and determine your tax liability.

While the process in the UAE can be straightforward, it also differs from parts of the world with more complicated tax regimes. To ensure you meet your tax responsibilities and only ever pay the tax you owe, it’s important to work with a local expert when preparing and filing your accounts.

That’s where tax consultant services come in. An expert consultant will work with you to determine the tax you are liable for and ensure it is paid in a timely and efficient manner.

So, if you’re doing, or looking to do, business in the UAE, here’s how tax consultant services can help.

What is tax consulting?

Tax consulting is a specialism within the financial services and advisory field, focusing on helping businesses navigate the inevitable complexity of tax regulation.

While you may work with a tax consultant for many reasons, the usual goal is to ensure you meet your tax obligations while minimising your liability through permitted deductions and strategic planning.

As almost every jurisdiction has its own tax laws and regulations, tax consulting is a particularly vital service if you work internationally or are entering a new market for the first time.

What does a tax consultant do?

The role of a tax consultant within your business will differ depending on your circumstances. But essentially, these experienced professionals work with entrepreneurs or businesses of all sizes to assist and advise on all tax-related matters.

Tax consultants are highly trained and accredited to ensure any advice they give is reliable, responsible, and compliant with all relevant laws and regulations. Depending on your needs, tax consulting can encompass the following services:

Planning: Tax consultants will work with you to implement and improve your tax processes, identifying opportunities for savings and suggesting strategies, investments and other approaches that can help to improve overall tax efficiency.

This may mean choosing a more suitable corporate structure, investing in equipment or making regular savings contributions.

Compliance: As well as helping to plan for tax efficiency, a tax consultant will also help to ensure that you remain compliant with all tax regulations in the jurisdictions that you work in.

In most cases, this means maintaining accurate and comprehensive financial records, preparing tax filings and staying up-to-date with changing tax regulations.

Administration: Even if you only have to file once a year, keeping abreast of your tax situation can be incredibly time-consuming. When you’re running your own business, you likely will not have the capacity to prepare and file your accounts, let alone stay on top of the latest regulations, deductions and potential savings.

A tax consultant can work with you on a regular basis to liaise with tax authorities and ensure that your business is tax-efficient and prepared for the next filing.

Types of taxes in Dubai

The UAE introduced its first widespread tax as recently as 2018. From January of that year, VAT was levied on many goods or services at a flat rate of 5%.

However, businesses are only obligated to collect and pay VAT if taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000. Businesses with taxable supplies and imports between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000 may voluntarily register for VAT.

Once registered, you have 28 days from the end of your tax year to file VAT returns and settle any payments.

While there is still no tax on personal income in the UAE, since June 2023, some businesses have been liable for a corporate tax rate of 9%. However, this only applies to businesses with net annual profits of AED 375,000 or more. The tax rate on profits under this threshold remains 0%.

Outside of this, the only major tax of note is customs duty, levied at 5% of the value of the relevant goods plus Cost Freight Insurance. Customs tax is much higher on goods that are harmful to health, such as alcohol (50%) and cigarettes (100%).

Importance of using tax consultancy services

There are two main reasons for hiring tax consultancy services in Dubai. For one, a tax consultant can ensure you only pay the tax you are liable for. This expert level of tax efficiency can result in significant savings, depending on your circumstances.

Everything from credits and deductions to tax-deferred savings, investments and expenses timing can potentially help to reduce your overall liability. Tax consultants are experts in this area and can advise on the most suitable and cost-effective strategies for your business.

An expert tax consultancy service will also ensure your business adheres to all relevant tax obligations and filing deadlines. This will help you avoid fines and other penalties and help avoid unexpected bills for inaccurate filings.

Accurate tax filing can significantly impact your business and its bottom line, potentially helping you save money and avoid unexpected expenses. What’s more, here in the UAE, missing, incomplete or inaccurate tax returns can lead to considerable fines, license suspension and revocation or even imprisonment.

That’s why it always pays to work with an expert who can ensure your business is fully compliant and tax-efficient.
